1st International Conference on “Crystal Engineering: From Molecule to Crystal”-2019

The 1st International Conference on “Crystal Engineering: From Molecule to Crystal” was held from 30 to 31 March 2019 in Raipur. Raipur is a capital city of Chhattisgarh state in central India. The conference was organized by Department of Chemistry, National Institute of Technology Raipur, India. Director NIT Raipur Prof. A. M. Rawani was chief guest and Prof. G. R. Desiraju was guest of honor. In his welcome address Prof. Rawani pointed out the importance of International conferences on exclusive research topics. The conference was organized under the chairpersonship of Dr.(Mrs.) F. Khan and secretaries Dr. K. A. Siddiqui and Dr. S .P. Mahapatra. Crystal engineering is a core research subject of Dr. Kafeel Ahmad Siddiqui. The conference was attended by 70 participants from India and neighboring countries. The two day format includes 2 Plenary (1 hour each), 4 Keynotes (40 minutes each), 9 invited talks (30 minutes each), plus additional 10 oral (20 minutes each) and 20 flash oral (2 minutes each) contributions selected by the Scientific Committee from the submitted abstract. The poster session enables about 25 participants to share their work in this exciting meeting for the crystal engineering community.
The Indian Crystallographic Association (ICA) supported the conference by providing a fund of INR 25000 for conference expenditure and 2 best poster and 2 best flash oral awards. Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, India supported the conference by providing fund of INR 1,25,000.00 for TA/DA of Senior and Young Scientist and pre-conference printing. The invitation to attend the conference as plenary lecturers was kindly accepted by Prof. Gautam R. Desiraju (Past President IUCr), and Prof. Edward R. T. Tiekink (Sunway University, Malaysia). The CE: FMC2019 also had a pleasure of hosting four other eminent scientists as keynote speakers: Prof. Kumar Biradha, Associate Editor Crystal growth & Design (IIT Kharagpur India), Prof. C. Malla Reddy (IISER Kolkata, India), Kittipong Chainok (Thammasat University, Thailand) and Prof. R. Vaidhyanathan (IISER Pune, India) and 10 young scientists as invited speakers.
In general, the conference covered a wide range of topics: single-crystal and powder diffraction, chemical crystallography, crystal engineering, charge density, quantum-chemical and database studies, and materials science. The event passed in an informal and friendly atmosphere with stimulating discussions during the sessions as well as in the coffee breaks, lunch and conference dinner. We hope that the conference helped our young colleagues to get better acquainted with the possibilities of contemporary crystallographic research and to recognize appropriate methods for further improvement of their work. 2nd CE:FMC2020 is scheduled to held in VNIT Nagpur, India. The General Assembly of CE:FMC2019 evaluated the conference as very successful and the generous support from the NIT Raipur, ICA, SERB-DST, IRTECH, TCI was gratefully acknowledged.
